New Disney Cruise Line Infant Age Limit Policy

Effective July 18, 2014, for all new bookings for sailings commencing after Jan. 1, 2015, the minimum age to sail aboard the Disney Cruise Line ships will increase from 12 weeks to 6 months of age on most itineraries.

The minimum age for Transatlantic, Hawai'i and Panama Canal itineraries will increase to 1 year of age. This change is consistent with the age restrictions of others in the cruise industry.

Guests with existing reservations to sail in 2015 with a child between the ages of 12 weeks and 1 year will be allowed to sail on their existing reservations.

After July 18, 2014, all new bookings for 2015 sailings must comply with the new rules.

Score Big!

It's not often that I discuss something not Disney related...but today I'm going to do it! I recently had the chance to try out ScoreBig.com.  Scorebig.com is a website to purchase tickets to sporting events, concerts, theatre and much more!

Quick Facts
  • You are guaranteed to save on each and every ticket on ScoreBig.com
  • Tickets for sports, concerts, theater, Broadway, family shows, and attractions
  • No fees - free delivery
  • Choose Your Seating Area - all seats ordered together will be next to each other
  • Tell us what you want to pay - you have all the control, it’s thrilling!
  • Get an instant answer - you find out right away if your offer has been accepted

I was offered a promo code for $100 to try out the site.  My hubby and I spent a few days checking out the various offers to see what might be fun.  We finally decided to try and purchase tickets to a Jets Pre-Season game.

How it Works

  1. Choose your event
  2. We don't tell you what to pay, you decide...how much you save is up to you
  3. By choosing a seating area rather than an exact seat, you're giving the ticket providers the flexibility they need to give you great deals
  4. Get an instant answer
So that's what we did! I picked the date of the game and entered an amount I was willing to pay per ticket. The seats were sectioned off into different categories and the normal "regular" price was listed as well.  On my first attempt my offer was not accepted but what I liked was I was given a counter offer instantly! Hubby decided he'd rather see another game so I went back and tried it again!

Second time was the charm because I instantly won 2 tickets to the Jet's vs. Colts Pregame next month!  It was definitely a new way to buy tickets but I really enjoyed it plus we got a good deal! I'll definitely check it out again next time we need tickets!

About ScoreBig
ScoreBig.com enables consumers to get great tickets for live sports, concert and theater events – at guaranteed savings of up to 60 percent. ScoreBig.com customers pick their own price on seats from the floor to the rafters, always pay less than box office price, and never pay any fees. For its partners, ScoreBig.com is the first and only opaque sales channel to move unsold ticket inventory in a way that protects the ticket owner’s brand and full-price sales. Headquartered in Los Angeles, Calif., ScoreBig.com was founded in 2009 and is backed by Bain Capital Ventures and U.S. Venture Partners. ScoreBig.com was recently recognized by Forbes as one of America’s Most Promising Companies and by Billboard as one of the 10 Best Start-ups of 2012.

Disney Cruise Line LIVE Chat Recap!

Last night was our big LIVE Disney Cruise Line chat! A few of you showed up with some great questions! I'm reposting all the questions and answers below! If you have more questions or are interested in a few quote, don't hesitate to contact me! Amanda@mouseketrips.com

  •  Q.Not a First Time Cruiser- but how do you decide which night to go to an adult only fancy dinner? I'm afraid we'd miss a fun dinner- like Animator's Palate!

    A. We usually check Personal Navigators from past cruises to get an idea of what each night has to offer. You can also call Disney (or have your travel agent do it) to find out what night select activities are (like Pirate night, or select ports). You can also request specific dining rotations!

Q.Speaking of Animator's Palate- is it different on each ship? We were a bit disappointed on the Dream- as the wait staff did not change colors, like I'd seen on TV! (But talking to Crush was cool!!!)

A.It is different on each ship! The older ships have a different style and theme but not the new technology

  • Q.
I've heard about the "adult only" portions of the ship/island. What kind of activities can we look forward to in these areas?

    A. Great question!! The adult only areas on each ship vary but you'll find pools, a coffee house, nightclubs, bars and the spa. All 18 and over only! On Castaway Cay there is an entire beach for 18 and over...and amazing open air massages!!

    Q. That's great to hear about the pools and beach areas! For the spas, do we need to make reservations ahead of time, or can we make an appointment while on board?

    A. Spa appointments are recommended in advance although you will be able to book somethings on board the ship depending on availability!

  • Q. What destination would you recommend for a 1st time family cruise & why? Do the spa treatments & gift shop merchandise go on sale while your in port like other cruise lines?

  • A. Great question! I usually recommend a 4 night sailing. Not only will you get to experience Castaway Cay but you'll also get a full day at sea to explore the ship! They do offer specials at the Spa on board but not as often in the gift shop. They also have a raffle on departure day for spa packages! Once you board everything has an open house so be sure to stop by and tour!

    Q. For a family on a budget what can you expect to spend on a cruise? Little ones are 3 and 1.

    A. It depends on so many things. Time of year will affect the price significantly (summer is most expensive). Once you pick that Disney has 4 different types of staterooms (Inside, Oceanview, Verandah and Suites). Once you select that there is a variety of categories. These will be different sizes and locations on the ship I'd be happy to provide you a quote anytime!

     Q. Is there a better time of the year to go on a Disney cruise . We have Never have been on a cruise ?

     A.  Good questions! Budgetwise, fall and early Spring are best but you may find the weather to not be as nice as summer. Fall you can experience hurricanes although Disney rarely cancels a cruise (they steer around the cruise!) And select destinations are only available on select dates (Europe and Alaska are summer only)

    Q. Do you have to have a passport for all of the cruises?

    A. For cruises that start and end in the U.S. A passport is not required. Just a birth certificate and drivers license. HOWEVER you can not fly back to the U.S. without a passport (think emergency). For internationally departing cruises yes you would

    Q. Do you have to pay for every passenger or ia there a price break for kids like under a certain age free?

A.Kids are less expensive but yes, you pay for anyone that boards the ship. The cool thing is kids 3 and older have tons of activities and things to do! The kids clubs are all FREE! The nursery does charge a small fee for those under 3.

Q.What kind of security do they have for if you leave your kids at nursery?
Kennedy has a "bracelet" that went on her ankle plus we had to show our room card and we had a password. Only my husband or myself could take her. They have several Cast Members that watch them AND she had a few visits from some special Princesses!

    Q. As far as meal planning goes , how would it work with a picky toddler ? Is there options for snacks vs meals ?

  • A.  There is SO much food to choose from. For breakfast and lunch you'll have your choice of a buffet or quick service (fast food options). They also typically have at least one table service option open. Dinner is rotational dining and you'll be assigned to a different restaurant each night. They are SOOOO accommodating when it comes to food...whether it be a picky toddler or special dietary requirements like gluten free or allergies.

And it's all included in the price! All food with the exception of select snacks and drinks via room service and the adult only dining options...yes room service is FREE!

The price of your cruise includes food, non-alcoholic drinks (with your meal or at the drink station) most of the room service menu, all entertainment, use of pools and more! Minimally the only extra's you'd spend is the gratuities you pay the staff. Then there is alcohol, excursions, spa treatments and adult dining but that's all optional!

  • Q. Are there options on the boat to buy diapers and wipes for young ones ?

Yup but very limited! I'd recommend either packing them or this a great service where you can order that stuff ahead of time and they'll deliver to the ship!

Disney Cruise Lines - Baby Supplieswww.babiestravellite.com
  • Q.  Do you know of any good ways to get a deal on Airfare to Orlando before the cruise? We just came home from the Dream......Incredible Cruise Experience BTW......and the cost of the airfare from Canada was twice the cost of the cruise! Thank you.....really enjoy your posts!:)

    A. I like using Kayak.com. It lets you know if you should buy now or wait and you can set up alerts that will tell you weekly or daily what the price of airfare is!

  • Q. You said dinner is rotational, so there are different themed restaurants without the extra price? I've only cruised Carnival and unless you go to a specialty restaurant, they are able to serve the same thing, nothing too different.
  • Oh yes! And on longer cruises they even have specialty menus! There are 3-4 main restaurants on each ship. When you check-in you are giving your rotation and you'll visit a different restaurant each night, with a different theme and menu. The best part is your servers travel with you! Here is more info!
    http://www.livingwiththemagic.com/.../disney-cruise-line...

  • Q. I know there are some kids/teens only areas, but I would love to be able to explore the whole ship. Are there specialty tours available to let me do that?

  • When you first board the ship everything is open...even the kids clubs! You can take a look around the entire ship. Once you set sail that's when certain areas become restricted. On longer sailing you'll want to check your Personal Navigator for special offerings like ship tours.

Holly Jolly Christmas Vacation- Transportation

This has been a hot topic around our house lately. One of the most expensive parts about a Walt Disney World vacation is getting there.

My first trip to Walt Disney World was when I was 18. My family was on a budget so we drove and stayed off site. My dad drove the entire 19 hours straight through.   We left in the middle of the night and actually had to call and book the hotel a night early because we got there so fast!

I had never really considered doing it again. My husband and I always fly, even when Kennedy was a baby we never considered driving. That is until this trip! I thought I'd share our thought process a bit to help you and your family decide!

There are three things that came into consideration when we decided to drive vs. fly

#1 Time
Ok so this seems like a no brainer right? The flight is typically about 2.5 hours vs the almost 24 that it will take to drive to Florida...but it's not so simple!

If we fly out of our local airport that's a half an hour away. Plus we have to show up 1.5-2 hours early so we are already at 2.5 hours. Add that to the 2.5 hour flight and we are at 5 hours and we've just landed! Now add on another 2 hours to get off the plane, collect our luggage and either grab our rental car or get on Magical Express.  Now we are at 7 hours total. Ok so for time, flying definitely wins out!!

#2 Convenience
This will be our first trip with 2 kids...a toddler and a baby.  Some aspects seem totally daunting...like making it through the airport with all our luggage, strollers, car seats...kids!! The conversation started with whether or not we were going to use Magical Express or rent a car.  Once we decided to rent a car then we had to decide whether we'd bring car seats or rent them...same with the stroller.  Our choices were either spend more money to rent or go through the hassle of dragging them through the airport.

We also typically place a grocery order from WeGoShop.com. We realized if we drive we could pack all the diapers, food and necessities we needed! Convenience wins out!

#3 Cost
I think this was the biggest factor for us...it's a number's game! Let's take a look!

Flying
Flights 3- $900
Car Rental-$225
Minimall we are at $1,125 without renting a stroller or car seats...which means dragging all our luggage, carry-ons, car seats and strollers through the airport with 2 kids.
Car Seat Rental-$90
Double Stroller Rental-$60
Total-$1,225

Driving
This one is tricky because you should consider wear/tear on the car as well as gas.
Gas-Roughly $400 give or take $50.
Hotel-Our plan is to drive straight through and get to Disney a night early. Right now the rate is $208.  On the way home we'll spend far less and stop somewhere along the way. Hopefully for less than $100 per night.
Food- We'll pack most of our food but probably budget $50 each way for meals.

We won't be renting anything as we'll bring our own stroller and obviously have the car seats. So right now we are at roughly $800.  Price wins out!!

Ultimately you have decide what works for your family. This time around we are going to give driving a try.  It's not just about the price to us but the convenience of throwing everything in the car and just going. We'll have our own car to drive around. Plus we'll have more room to bring home souvenirs!!!

Holly Jolly Christmas Vacation Resort

Today I'm finally going to talk a little bit about resort choice. I think this is one is such a hard decision for most folks because they get so much feedback from friends and family. Plus for a lot of families, going to Walt Disney World is a once in a lifetime event. They won't get the chance to stay at more than one resort, so the decision of WHICH resort is a big one!

Before I give you a little insight let's take a look at some things to consider when selecting a Disney Resort!!

Family Size
I think this is a good one to start with as it might dictate WHERE you can stay. Due to fire code, some resorts only accommodate 4 people per room. These include:
-All Star Movies, Sports and Music (except Family Suites)
-Pop Century
-Art of Animation (Standard Rooms)
-Coronado Springs (except Suites)
-Caribbean Beach
-Port Orleans French Quarter
-Wilderness Lodge
-Animal Kingdom Lodge (except villas)

Of course at these resorts you have the option of booking TWO rooms but that would be an increased cost. Keep in mind that at ANY Disney resort you are guaranteed connecting rooms if you have only 2 adults.

For families of five Disney offers a variety of family suites, executive suites and villas to accommodate your whole family in one room. Check out these options by clicking here.

Budget
Disney offers a wide variety of resorts for almost any budget.  Keep in mind for these discussions we are only discussing on property resorts. To see all the great benefits to staying ON property, click here.

Value Resorts-  These are the cheapest options on property and offer basic amenities. These rooms (Except family suites) are the smallest on property and offer a split bath, double beds and a small table with chairs. The resorts offer just a food court (no table service) and several pools (without slides).

Moderate Resorts- These resorts are a step up from the value resorts. With the exception of Caribbean Beach they'll offer 2 Queen beds and slightly larger rooms. These properties offer table service restaurants, pools with slides and a slight more adult or upscale themeing.

Deluxe and Deluxe Villa Resorts- These resorts offer a wide range of room types including 1, 2 and 3 bedroom Villa. These properties are the closest to the theme parks, offer many restaurant options and the largest rooms. These are also the most expensive options on property.

Travel Style
This one is tricky..especially if you haven't been to Disney before! Many families love to stay as inexpensively as possible. Not because they can't afford a more expensive option but simply because they spend so little time at the resort; it's simply a place to sleep. Other families love to enjoy their resort and all the amenities they offer.

Value resorts will offer the least amount of amenities, while moderate and deluxe properties offer more dining options,as well as recreation, pools, location and more!

Now that we've laid out some things to consider, you are probably wondering where we decided to stay? Well we went through a few options before making our final decision!

-Art of Animation family suite. Technically we all fit BUT it was going to be a tight squeeze for 6 and maybe a little TOO much family time.
-Boardwalk..my favorite resort! We decided a 2-bedroom villa would offer us the space and location we really wanted
-After running some more numbers, we figured if we downgraded and sacrificed the space we could actually stay at Disney a bit longer! We moved ourselves over to Caribbean Beach with free dining. It was a great deal and we thought we were all set until...

Kennedy saw a video on YouTube for Art of Animation and went NUTS. She was so excited at the themeing, colors and rooms that we relooked at our budget. Ultimately this trip is for the girls and a 3.5 year old just wouldn't have the same reaction to Caribbean Beach.  For almost the same price, we move over to a standard room at Art of Animation, keeping dining and forgoing any discounts. To us the resort is just really worth it. We love the location, themeing and amenities and just know that Kennedy will too!

I'll be doing another post shortly on Disney's Art of Animation resort and Little Mermaid Standard rooms and all the benefits that made us decide to stay here!
