Rider Swap

Rider Swap is a very cool feature that many don't know about at the Walt Disney World Resort. What is Rider Swap?  Let's say you are traveling with 2 small children.  You arrive at Splash Mountain and your youngest doesn't meet the height requirement...or is simply not ready to ride due to a fear. This is where Rider Swap comes in!

1) Check with the Cast Member at the ENTRANCE if Rider Swap is available (see below for a list of attractions)

2) Your party will be issued Rider Swap passes for the adult who is going to stay behind with the younger child.

3)  Parent #1 will enjoy the attraction with the child who is capable of/wants to ride, while Parent #2 stays behind.  Parent #1 and child will go through the regular queue at the posted wait time or Fastpass+ queue if you have reservations.

4) Once the first party has finished, Parent #2 can now enjoy the attraction (again with the child who is capable of /wants to ride...lucky kid!) with little to no wait!  Remember that Parent #2 only gets TWO passes to return; one for themselves and one for a 2nd guest.

How Does Rider Swap work with FastPass+
There are two ways to approach this!
1)Saving FastPass+ for the whole family.  For instance at Animal Kingdom, let's say your whole family wants to ride the Safari but only 3 of you want to ride Expedition Everest. Don't waste your FastPass+ on Everest!  Use your FastPass+ for something EVERYONE can enjoy and use Rider Swap early in the day when the Stand-by line is shorter, for Rider Swap! If you use this plan of attack, be sure to hit the Rider Swap rides when the Stand-by line is shorter so the rest of your party doesn't have long to wait.

2) Splitting up your FastPass+...this means Mom schedules 3 FastPass+ and Dad schedules 2 FastPass+.  Rider Swap works the same as it does above, except that Parent #1 is only waiting through the FastPass+ line instead of standby.

The problem with this approach is that Child #1 (that is able to ride) only gets THREE FastPass's. If you have 3 kids total and 2 can ride, while 1 can't, this approach might work by splitting up but it can be complicated and tricky!

Top 10 Counter Service Restaurants

Much of the time when clients are preparing for their Walt Disney World vacations the focus is on table service restaurants. It's imperative to make reservations in advance so it's no surprise it's often the focus of our planning. Today thought, I'd like to talk about my favorite counter service locations. I think Disney does such an amazing job at offering a variety of food. Disney has so much more to offer than burgers and fries!! My selections below are simply my personal favorites. They are not necessarily the best value, the cheapest or anything else...just my favorites that I tend to visit over and over!

FastPass+

I thought it was probably about time to talk about FastPass+. I briefly touch on it in a few My Disney Experience posts but let's go into a bit more detail.

Disney's FastPass system has been around since 1999.  FastPass has always been a FREE service for ALL guests who enter through Disney's "gates".

Here is how it used to work:
1) Head to any attraction that had FastPass...remember not ALL attractions offered this feature (still true to this day).
2) Slide your park ticket into the machine
3) The machine would print out a ticket with your return time on it.
4) Simply return back to the attraction within that window and enter the FastPass line. You would supposedly have little to no wait!

There was no limit to how many times a day you could get FastPasses. There were only TWO rules:

1) Wait until 2 hours after you got your first FastPass before getting another
2) Wait until the first FastPass expired before getting another (could be sooner than 2 hours)

The system was good, but you had to walk (or run) to each attraction to get your passes, then you had to make sure you didn't LOSE your passes PLUS you window to return was pretty strict (well in recent years anyway).

Then Disney introduced FastPass+. The new system works similar to the old system with a lot of changes! Here is how it works now.

When can you get your FastPass+?
-60 days prior for On-Site Guests
-30 days prior for Annual Passholders
-Day of for off-site guests

How many FastPass+ can you get?
At this time just 3 per day, in one park...HOWEVER, often times you'll be allowed to select 4 at Magic Kingdom.  There is also a survey that many guests have received asking if the 3 works for them or if they'd like to see more.

How does it work?
For on-site guests simply log-in to your My Disney Experience Account and select FastPass+

Next up...pick the day you want to start with!

And pick everyone who's going to participate. Remember your group CAN split up, you'll just have to do this step twice. For instance if Mom want's to take the little one's on Dumbo while Dad and the big kids head to Space Mountain, that's ok!

Now pick which park you'll be at. Remember you only get to pick FastPass+ experiences for ONE park per day so if you have Park Hoppers, choose wisely!

Now you'll get to pick which 3 attractions you'd like to add.  Keep in mind that depending on WHEN you are selecting, not all attractions/rides/shows may appear.

Now you'll be given time options for your selections.  You'll only get 4 scenarios BUT you may be able to go back in later and select new times for individual attractions.

To change a FastPass+ time or experience, just click on My Reservations and scroll down to your FastPass+ selections. Click update next to the day you are wanting to change.

Since I have no trip planned, I can't go much further for you but here is the screen where you will be given options to replace attractions, times, etc.  I find it MUCH easier to do on the mobile version but either will work!

So what now?  Well when you show up at the parks, just head to the attraction you selected, within the time frame.  You'll tap your Magic Band and voila!

The great thing about the new system is you can update your selections on the go! Have an early FastPass+ scheduled but decide to sleep in? Simply log-in and update the time (based on availability).

Why I love the new system:
1) The flexibility! You can update times and attractions on the go!
2) Sleep in! By scheduling some popular attractions later in the day, you don't necessarily have to be at Rope Drop anymore!
3) Organization! I love being able to plan 60 days in advance and have a plan in place!
4) I love knowing that I'm "guaranteed" to see some of my favorite attractions with little to no wait!

So where can you use FastPass+?

Illuminations Sparkling Dessert Party

This is something I'm VERY excited about!  Most people are familiar with the Tomorrowland Terrace Dessert Party for Wishes viewing but now you can purchase tickets to the Illuminations Sparkling Dessert Party!

I'm still gathering details BUT here is the idea.  The party will be held in World Showcase Plaza which offers a great viewing location of Illuminations.

There will be a variety of desserts along with Sparkling wines. Prices are $49.99 per adult (ages 10 and up); $29 per child (ages 3-9). The price includes tax and 18 percent gratuity. The party will be held on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m.

Hopefully they'll serve some yummy desserts like we had at our party...like the Tiramisu!

Best Meals for Kids at Disney

It's no surprise that Disney does a great job when it comes to restaurants. There are endless choices that include various types of cuisine, decor, location, characters...and more!   Depending on your family...and your kids, not all options may appeal to everyone! Today let's talk about the options for kids!
These are in no particular order and are a mix of both counter service and table service!

'Ohana
This is super popular for both breakfast and dinner (although breakfast is far easier to get into).  'Ohana is located at Disney's Polynesian which is just a short monorail or boat ride from the Magic Kingdom.

  •  Breakfast: Dine with Mickey, Pluto, Lilo and Stitch at this all-you-care-to-enjoy breakfast, served family style! Not only is the food great, but you get to meet Mickey too!
  • Dinner: Another all-you-care-to-enjoy meal but this time it's served up Hawaiian style!! 'Ohana means family so join the 'Ohana family for an amazing meal with a little entertainment thrown in!  The menu has a little something for everyone including salad, chicken wings, potstickers, vegetables, wood fired meats AND one of the best desserts on property (according to me anyway)!
Be Our Guest

When I asked my Facebook fans which meal their kids loved best, Be Our Guest was a popular answer!  Not only is this a one of a kind restaurant, but there are choices!
  • Counter Service: During the day this restaurant is open as a counter service restaurant...meaning no reservations required! Be forewarned that it's EXTREMELY popular and the wait time can be long.  Be sure to go early or late and avoid the noon rush.  The menu is slightly more sophisticated than just burgers and fries, but that's the best part! It has great options for both adults and kids and some of the best cupcakes on property!
  • Table Service: While this is currently the most sought after and hard to get reservation, if you are able to dine here for dinner you won't regret it! What child wouldn't want to eat in the Beasts' castle? The menu is a bit different from what is served at lunch but is still a great mix of kid friendly food, while still having something a bit more sophisticated for the adults. Plus, while not guaranteed, many times you have the opportunity to meet the Beast after dinner!
Whispering Canyon

Are you looking for a location with great food where your kids can let loose?  Whispering Canyon is the place to be!  Just a quick boat ride from the Magic Kingdom, Whispering Canyon is located at Disney's Wilderness Lodge and is a rip roaring good time!  The menu is a bit of American BBQ with a ton of fun thrown in. Expect lots of singing, yelling and running around! Oh and don't forget the Bottomless Milkshakes!!

Mama Melroses

Mama Melroses is one of my family's personal favorites, tucked away in a quiet corner of Hollywood Studios.  The food her is Italian but our favorite part is when we book this restaurant in conjunction with the Fantasmic Dining Package. There is NO extra cost for this package!!  So what's the big deal? You get priority seating to the Fantasmic! Show later that night.  Which means less time waiting in line, less time sitting on hot (or cold depending on the season) metal bleachers....which makes for happier kids!!

Tusker House

While many folks flock to Chef Mickey's (a great option in close proximity to the parks) it's often very hard to get into.  Tusker House located in Disney's Animal Kingdom is a great (and many feel better) alternative. You still have the opportunity to meet Mickey and Donald (and often a few more of the Fab 5), Tusker House is locate within the Animal Kingdom requiring no additional traveling. Plus this is a great option with characters for both Breakfast AND Lunch. I usually recommend lunch as a nice break from a wild morning in the park.

Via Napoli

What's better for a picky eater than Pizza?  Via Napoli is a great option for when you are visiting EPCOT. Located in Italy in EPCOT's World Showcase, Via Napoli is a great option for both lunch and dinner. Lunch can be a great economical choice if you are not on the dining plan and can often cost around the same as a counter service meal!

Food Courts

Albeit this is a generic suggestion but the food courts have so much to offer everyone! Many of the food courts are now offering more custom meals, which can be great for little ones.  Plus a few food courts offer specialties like pasta bars, all you can eat Dole Whip and more. Plus they are a great option if you are spending some time hanging  by the pool and want to keep it simple!

Want to check out the menu's for these restaurants and more?  Check out the menu's over at AllEarsNet!

Stay with Mickey!

While it doesn't happen often, every once in a while I have a potential client/friend/stranger that says, "Why Stay on Site...it's SO much cheaper to stay off-site!"  While years ago it was simply a matter of money and proximity, today it's not quite so simple. Today I'll share the top 10 reasons to stay on Disney property!

Top 10 Reasons to stay On-Site
(In no particular order)

Disney Dining Plans
If you have been following along on my blog, you'll know that I'm a HUGE fan of the Disney Dining Plan. Most of my clients purchase the Quick Service or Plus Dining Plan. Not only can these plans save you 20-30% off the regular cost of food. Even if you didn't save that much...or simply break even, my family loves the convenience of these plans.  We don't have to budget ahead and guess how much we spend, we don't have to order something cheaper on the menu....we simply order what we are in the mood for and have the credit deducted from our plan!

To read more about click HERE!

Magic Bands
If you are new to Disney, let me share a little bit more with you about how Disney's Magic Bands work. Prior to your trip you'll have the opportunity to customize your Magic Band in one of 7 colors (Re d, Blue, Green, Pink, Yellow, Orange or Grey). These are shipped directly to your home about 4 weeks prior to your trip.

Then once you arrive at Walt Disney World, let the fun begin! Your Magic Band will hold your:
  • Room Key
  • Park Ticket
  • Dining Plan Credits
  • Charging Privileges
  • FastPass+ Access (see below)
Currently (and for the foreseeable future) these bands are only available to guests staying on Walt Disney World property. I can tell you from personal experience that these bands make your Disney vacation stress free and convenient.

UPDATE-Offsite guests can purchase Magic Bands now for $12.95 a piece.

So how do they work? Simple! Everything is stored electronically on your band and you simply tap! You tap to enter your room...you tap to enter the parks...you tap to access your FastPass+ experiences...you tap to use Dining Plan credits...tap, tap, tap! No digging for money or tickets...everything is simply stored on your Magic Band. It's....well, Magic!

FastPass+
Ok so you got me on this one...FastPass+ is technically available to ALL guests who enter the parks. On-site guests have a very clear advantage though!  If you stay on-site and have tickets linked to your My Disney Experience account, you can book your FastPass+ experiences 60 days in advance!!

So what is FastPass+? It's a convenient system that allows you to PRE-SELECT 3 attractions per day (in just one park). You select the date and time and once you show up to the attraction, you enter a special line for FastPass+ and have little to no wait.  There are even shows, parades and fireworks to choose from.

Staying offsite?  Soon you'll be able to schedule your FastPass+ in advance, but only 30 days!

Disney Guest Service
Disney is known for their amazing guest service...it's what keeps guests coming back year after year. Whether it's at your resort, the parks...even the bus drivers!  Everyone strives to keep up the standard of the world renowned guest service. When staying off site you never know what you might get...especially if you consider renting a home or timeshare.

Free Transportation
That's right...FREE! It's a word we don't often use in conjunction with Disney.  Starting the moment you land at the Orlando International Airport! Disney whisks you away on one of their air conditioned motorcoaches right to your resort...they even grab your bags for you! That's the great perk called Magical Express and it will bring you back to the airport after your vacation has come to an end.

Not only that but Disney offers FREE transportation from your resort to all the parks, water parks and Downtown Disney. You are on vacation...why worry about driving when Disney will take care of it for you? Buses run every 15-20 minutes non-stop.

Free Parking
Did you know that if you stay off-property and drive you are looking at $20 a day for parking!! For a week vacation, that adds up super quickly! Plus you'll have to pay for gas so factor that into your budget too.  Some off-site properties off some type of shuttle but they don't run consistently meaning you'll be stuck at the parks all day (no mid-day break, nap or pool time).

Extra Magic Hours

Disney offers guests staying on property extra time in the parks.  On select days, resort guests can access one park an hour early while another stays open up to 2 hours later! This is a special benefit just for those staying on Disney Property and can allow you some extra time while the wait times are a little less (usually in the morning hours).

Disney Themeing

No one pays attention to the details like Disney does!  By selecting a Disney property you can stay in a room fit for a Pirate or a Princess....a suite surround by your favorite characters from Cars, Nemo or Lion King...view Giraffes from your balcony and much much more! Disney resorts are unique and offer something for everyone, in every price range!

Proximity to the Parks
Did you know that Walt Disney World is TWICE the size of the city of Manhattan!? That's 47 square miles. Traveling within the "world' can be time consuming, but when you move outside the property, it can take even longer!  Some resorts are even within walking distance to the parks (like Disney's Contemporary or Beach Club.)

Itinerary Planning Services
When you book a Disney resort vacation with a Disney Travel Planner (like ME!) we can assist with every aspect of your vacation! We offer several planning packages, at nominal costs, to assist with your planning needs!

Happy Anniversary!

Today marks our 4th Wedding Anniversary. So much has happened in the last 4 years yet our wedding seems like it was just yesterday! I was going to post a few recaps of our trip but instead thought I would just share a few photos with you all...ok maybe more than a few!

We arrived a few days prior to the wedding...and let me tell you, it was COLD!! We are New Yorker's and it was even chilly for us!

The night before our wedding was no exception! We didn't necessarily pack for such chilly weather unfortunately! First up was our rehearsal, followed by dinner at 'Ohana and finally a dessert party in Italy at EPCOT for Illuminations!

Finally the day of the wedding! Due to the cold weather we had to move our reception inside, which despite not being prepared for, turned out to be a great move!!
The morning of the wedding the girls headed for breakfast at the Grand Floridian followed by manicures at the Spa!

Some getting ready and pre-wedding photos

Our families did some photos before the wedding so we could head straight the reception!

Before the wedding we did something a bit non-Traditional....we saw each other. It was a private moment between us (and our awesome photographers, the Roots).  We managed to get quite a few pictures of just us before the ceremony. This is still one of my favorite moments of the whole day.

A few more fun pictures at the Boardwalk

It was finally time for the big moment! It flew by! We were blessed to have my brother perform the ceremony for us.

A few more tears were shed, a few more pictures were taken and it was time to head to the reception!

Our reception was originally supposed to take place outside at the Tamu Tamu courtyard at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Due to the cold weather we moved it inside to Conservation Station.

Some details our our reception!

A loved the background during a lot of photos...especially our first dance!

We even had a few friends join us!

As usual I over shared our wedding photos but I hope you enjoyed! I still can't believe it's been 4 years!  Life has changed so much! We know have a sweet, wild and crazy almost 3 year old....her bff, a 2 year old Boxer puppy and a sweet baby sister on the way!

Thank you so much for following along as we reminisced about our big day! Happy Anniversary to my amazing, hard working, dedicated, loyal and fun husband! It's been a wild ride and I can't wait to see what the next 4 years...10 years...20 years....and more hold for us! I love you!
